How it Works
with and without me,
within the space 2019
The work consists of two video screens. In one, the artist moves a panel. In the other, the panel appears to move on its own, creating a contrast between control and autonomy.
The panel was originally developed while the artist was studying at university, where a tutor suggested continuing the work as a sculptural practice.
Rather than consolidating this direction, the artist chose to move away from a static, medium-specific approach, using the panel as a device to question authorship, physicality, and repetition.
In this sense, the work reflects the artist’s desire to detach from a fixed medium while simultaneously critiquing DIY culture and the practical difficulties of making physical work.
It speaks to the struggle of finding space to produce, store, and sustain sculptural practice within limited living conditions and under the financial pressures shaping contemporary artistic life.
The use of cheap materials mirrors the precariousness of modern urban living, where access to suitable studio space is increasingly limited. The room divider functions as both object and boundary, symbolising the spatial and economic constraints that shape contemporary art-making.
